Quick thoughts: a change in media. I see it driven by commercial demands.
Nowadays, newspaper columns near the back page are too low key as coverage for
most sponsors. They would hope for live coverage, which means shorter games, and
lessen their hosting costs.
Various titled players have chosen to break away with FIDE and hawked their
championships and events independently, seeking sponsors directly, which has led
to more ready exploitation or undermining of chess playing conditions than would
happen with the formerly singularly powerful and all-inclusive FIDE. I suspect
this unfortunate situation of skittle championship chess is a result of FIDE not
getting a grip on the World Chess championship and breakaways. If FIDE had been
the main funnel for dealings with organisers, their power would have ensured
less manipulation of playing conditions in the way a powerful union would, and
the conservative resistance of a large and historic body would have slowed the
pace of changes. At the moment it may be "divide and conquer".
As it is, FIDE is shortening the time controls to compete with the breakaway
associations in the commercial world. It is aware of the risk of seeming
antiquated and irrelevant.
