Subject: Zugzwang with GM-like perfomance in Lippstadt tournament

Author: Dirk Frickenschmidt

Date: 03:04:57 08/19/98

At the annual Lippstadt tournament the program Zugzwang played quite good this
year.

Let me cite TWIC:
"At one point it looked as if the computer Zugzwang would be the runaway winner
of the tournament. Developed at nearby Paderborn University and a regular
competitor at Lippstadt, it led with 5/7 and was running a performance rating of
2640 before Slovenian IM Dusko Pavasovic's exemplary win against it in Round 8."

It's final standing as 3rd ahead of GMs Bischoff and Kindermann and it's
performance of 2544 in such a tournament still is GM-like level.

One of Zugzwang's remarkable games was it's win with black against GM Kindermann
in a French(!) game: playing crystal clear positional chess against the human
and then beating him in a sharp ending. ;-)

One more win happened against the young star Luke McShane achieving a GM norm in
Lippstatt. He was hit tactically right from the opening in a wild-west Sicilian:

On the other hand IM Pavasovic succeeded in overplaying the computer program
with reversed castling in a Russian game, where black got a fast and
irresistible king side attack after a pawn sacrifice in the opening (one of the
two options of classical anti-computer chess: sharp, sacrificing kingside
attacks or closed positional outplaying):
