The default "ChessMaster" personality. Before you adjust any knobs, save it as
anything else. Out of the box.

I cannot, as there was no reason to save them. Just use the option in
ChessMaster (4000 or 5000, I cannot imagine 5500 which I do not have is any
different) to play a computer vs computer tournament. Say between the
ChessMaster personality and the amended one (W-Pilz say), or involve more
players. Give it a reasonable time per move (as far as CM permits ;-6 ) and
leave it running. Then look at the result.

When I "ran" these, ChessMaster almost always came out on top. When it didn't,
and X scored higher, a one-to-one tournament vs X would settle it back in favour
of the default personality.

Hence my skepticism.

You do not mention your hardware. On a modern-ish Pentium, Chessmaster will
annihilate a 1450 uscf player in all its personality guises... You must make it
weaker in order to win, and I've no knowledge of how to do this (there may well
be a feature there to do this - I have not looked - or else just rack some of
the controls to silly values, like Rook = 1 ;-0) ).

As I wrote below:

>>My evidence is drawn from matches "within" CM

i.e. No matches / tourneys against humans or other programs were involved.

Kind regards
