Many people give the common "thanks for the game" as a way of irritating the opponent. Many don't like it. I personally ignore it but IM/GM players are a different type... As far as playing weird openings, I have seen players get upset with people playing "garbage" against them. Perhaps it has happened enough that he simply is warning folks first... And as I said, you _never_ know what has happened in the past. Had you read some of Roman's finger notes from time to time you would draw a different picture of him than if you got to actually know him... The network is full of jerks. They seem to like to try to irritate the well- known players as a way of "having fun"... It happens _everywhere_..
