I am not sure that it is being "(mis)used to the extreme".
There was a time when there were so many discussions about crafty that some
suggested to rename this forum to "Crafty Chess Forum".
Considering the fact that crafty has a very active mailing list, people still
choose to ask questions in the the forum.
Why?
Maybe sometime people expect to get multiple input (answers) to their posts
(questions).

It might seem too obvious to some but "rocket science" to others.

However, I believe my original question was asked partly because of the fact
that I am not very familiar with video cards and not sure if I need to upgrade,
and I needed to know if using CM9k would be an excuse for me to upgrade my video
card.

I didn't buy CM9k yet.
I think troubleshooting questions, and even those silly questions, are important
for some to read before buying a product.

I guess it boils down to the fact that it is probably important to some but
irritating to others.

Actually, sometimes, I find them interesting too. ;)
