I have just completed the task of reading all of the August 1998 messages on the CCC Message Board. What a job that was! I did not keep track of the time, but it took many hours. About the title: On my computer, unread messages appear in blue and read messages appear more-or-less black. Now, when I select filter and look at all messages, listed by date, author, or thread, there are no blue messages. I got all of the blue out! [Of course, if I were to delete temporary internet files, then all the blue would come back again.] What can be done to speed up the process? Suppose you are away a month or so and come back to find a "blue million" bulletins posted here? Will you even try to get caught up? In the beginning, I printed out the list of all August 98 messages by thread and identified the threads which sounded most interesting. The thread which I personally found to be the most interesting was the one dealing with the future of computer chess. That thread contained a lot of interesting ideas on that topic. After mulling around awhile ["floundering"], I hit on the following idea: Use "filter" to produce a list of all of the bulletins by date. Then I opened the earliest bulletin. After going through the thread headed-up by that bulletin, I then went back to the list by date and then read the next-earliest post. This process was repeated until all were gone. Eventually, it became evident that the process would be speeded up somewhat if, whenever a bulletin was read, to go to the top of the thread by double clicking on the "In reply to:" bulletin. This made it easy to see all related unread messages. I then read then before returning to "filter all by date." QUESTION: Is there a better way?
