The reason is that the average CPU is getting faster. Most of Kurt's testing (as
well as the testing of just about everybody else who is a computer chess
hobbyist) was done with top-end CPUs (for the time). The default selective
search setting for CM has always been a bit behind the cutting-edge because our
typical user does NOT have a cutting-edge CPU. But, now that P4s are more
common, we split the difference and went with 9 (Kurt used 12 almost
exclusively, I believe).

The METHOD is the same, but the calculations are not. So, to use The King v3.23,
you need the CM9000 GUI. To use The King 3.12, you need the CM8000 GUI.
