The only case of a commercial engine I know of (not counting the endless parade of "mychess 0.1" programs on ICC that are not worth mentioning) was in a past WMCCC event. A genius ripoff that was caught. I've named all the "known" crafty ripoffs that have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt (le petite, voyager, bionic impakt, gunda-1). There are others that I don't mention because I have never had an easy way to prove or disprove such a claim. However, when a strong new program comes along, plays a while, and then goes "bye-bye" with no further notice, you can figure "something was awry there."
