John's guess was right: In Fritz, the **GUI** acesses the Nalimov tablebases as
soon as a tbs. position has been reached, no matter if the engine can do that or
not. This is what the checkbox in the F3 "load engine" dialogue controls, the
*GUI option* to use the tbs. The access by the *engines* would have to be
controlled by their engine options each, if implemented.

This is inavoidably one of the most common misunderstandings of the Fritz GUI...
probably caused by the fact that dialogue box text has to be short. Although
simply adding the words GUI, or interface, in the correct place should have been
possible ("GUI uses tablebases "). But so, you have "use tablebases" options
often twice: In the F3 dialogue, and in the engine options. Of course people
will think it's the same and don't feel any need to look into the Fritz help
(where it's correctly explained). In addition to that, it may be that it's
necessary to *restart* Fritz, to have a change of that option come into effect.
So people testing to uncheck that, will see no immediate difference. Also,
switching the GUI tbs. option off won't stop the engine's own tbs. access...

(By that, even freeware or older engines which do not have tbs. access of their
own benefit from the tbs. when database positions are actually reached in a
game. Although it may be too late :o) - Some late endgame issues (bugs) may
remain unnoticed because of that when using Fritz.)
