Hi all, Since some days I test the new Junior5 32-bit (Fritz-)engine. I run all tests on two Pentium 200MMX machines with 64Mbyte Ram each. To make it short: Amir's new version is really a marvellous chess program, not only considerably better than Junior 4.6, but also a real challenge to *all* strong programs I use (Fritz5, Hiarcs6, Rebel9, Mchess 7.1, Genius5, Shredder2, Crafty 15.x etc). It has become very fast and very good in tactics (the hash tables are also working very fast now, but what surprises me much more is that the same program most times also plays positionally very sound attacking chess, even on blitz level. First of all I hardly could believe to see it score around 70-% in some dozens of autoplayer Blitz games against top opponents like Genius5 (very good in Blitz), Mchess 7.1 and others. Of course it owes all its chess understanding to the autoplayer, just as Fritz5 did before :-) Here are two nice examples from the 10'/game matches, demonstrating some of Juniors well developed positional skill: Junior5 - Genius5 [D46] Blitz:10' Wuppertal, 22.08.1998 [DF] 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 c6 4.Nc3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 Bd6 7.0-0 e5 8.cxd5 cxd5 9.e4 dxe4 10.Nxe4 Nxe4 11.Bxe4 exd4 12.Bc2 0-0 13.Qd3 Nf6 aus dem Buch 14.Bg5 Re8 15.Bxf6 Qxf6 16.Qxh7+ Kf8 17.Rad1 Bc5 18.Qh5 b6 19.Ng5 Ke7 20.Nh7 Qh6 21.Qe5+ Kd8 22.Qd5+ Bd6 23.g3 Rb8 24.Ng5 Rb7 25.Rxd4 Rd7 26.Nxf7+ Rxf7 27.Qxf7 Bd7 28.Rfd1 Re6 29.Bf5 Re7 30.Qg8+ Kc7 31.Qc4+ Bc6 32.Qa6 Bb7 33.Qxa7 Re5 34.Rc4+ Rc5 35.Rxc5+ bxc5 36.Be4 Qe6 37.Qxb7+ Kd8 38.Qxg7 Ke8 39.Qh8+ Kd7 40.Qh7+ Kd8 41.Bf5 Qe7 42.Qh4 Qxh4 43.Rxd6+ Ke7 44.Re6+ Kf7 45.gxh4 c4 46.h5 c3 1-0 Hiarcs6 - Junior 5 [C18] Blitz:10' Wuppertal, 24.08.1998 [DF] 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 Qc7 7.Qg4 Ne7 8.Bd3 cxd4 9.Ne2 dxc3 10.Qxg7 Rg8 11.Qh6 Nbc6 12.f4 Rxg2 13.Kf1 Rg8 14.Nxc3 Nd4 15.Nb5 Nxb5 16.Bxb5+ Bd7 17.Bd3 Ba4 18.Ra2 Nf5 19.Qxh7 0-0-0 20.Qh5 d4 21.Rg1 Rxg1+ 22.Kxg1 Rg8+ 23.Kf2 Ne3 24.Bxe3 dxe3+ 25.Kf3 Bc6+ 26.Kxe3 Qb6+ 27.Kd2 Rg2+ 28.Be2 Qd4+ 29.Kc1 Qe3+ 30.Kb2 Rxe2 0-1 Hiarcs6 was the only program hitting back equally hard at times. As I said, Junior5 lost only around 30% of the games against the top programs (a bit less against some, a bit more against others). This encourages me to begin a new small "Junior5 welcome tournament" with two tournament games each (40/2h, white and black) against the programs listed above (plus one or two others). This way you may get a first Junior impression from some games against strong opponents. I can use the two computers for auto-testing only overnight, so there should be one game per day, beginning tonight and posting the first game tomorrow. I will begin with Genius5. Kind regards from Dirk
