The draw score for ruffian is probably a result of the depth it reached, rather than specific knowledge. 24 plies is probably enough to recognize that neither side can win... Crafty does have specific knowledge to play this endgame fairly correctly, but it doesn't try to recognize draws, it just tries to defend with the king in the right place, on general principles of KRP vs KR.
