I think, the most important difference is that the yace author Dieter is a very active member of CCC. He is always willing to reply on questions or bug reports regarding his program. Dieter is also willing to share his wide knowledge about chess programmming with us. The Ruffian author isn't. So there is less info and more room for speculations. Of course, we can't expect from every author to be available here. It's his own decision.
