I personally don't believe that Ruffian is a clone. But at one stage I was suspicious, because at least twice I said "hello" to perola on ICC and he didn't respond. Up until that point, I had never met a chess programmer who didn't like to talk about his program. I guess he might not speak English well, or he may have ambitions about joining the professional ranks, or he may simply be the exception to the rule.
