This still does not help very much, since it doesn't say at what point in the
program that you are getting the message.

However, since you apparently have a rather old graphics card, it is quite
possible that you do not have drivers for it that are 100% compliant with
DirectX 8.1. I would first suggest that you try to update these drivers. If no
new ones are available, then you may be out of luck. You should go to
www.s3graphics.com (or the website for the actual maker of the card, if it is
not s3), and check for new drivers.

The problem is likely that the drivers you are using now are telling Chessmaster
that the card is able to do something that it actually cannot do, namely support
the DirectX 8.1 features that the True3D boards require.

There is code in CM9000 to fall back on 2D boards if the card cannot support the
True3D boards, but this code assumes that the drivers are telling the truth.
