Under winboard in analysis mode it has also no problem to find the mate,
I have no idea how the poster could get it not to mate in KR vs K.

If it is not done under a free gui then I suspect that the gui played and not
the engine.
This is one of the things that I dislike in the Fritz interface.
It simply play in tablebases positions and does not let the engine to play.

If the target is to save time then saving more time is going to be simply if the
interface adjudicate tablebases position and not continue.

I remmeber one game(1 minute per game) when my movei under Fritz gui lost on
time in tablebases position(movei had a winning position of KQ vs KR) and it did
not play the last moves.
