I installed Ruffian 1.0.1 under the Chess Assistant interface (UCI) and ran two matches between Ruffian and Gambit Tiger 2 (using CA's Engine-Engine). The only difference between the two matches was a different opening book for Ruffian. AMD 1.4GHz 512MB memory 128MB hash pondering off Tablebases: 3, 4 and some 5-man. 1 minute + 1 sec. per move. === Match 1: Ruffian uses its own book It was a close match with Ruffian leading after 40 games, but Gambit Tiger winning in the end. I watched some of the games and noticed that 10-15 moves into the game Ruffian was usually about 10 seconds behind on the clock. Tiger Gambit II: 80, +30=23-27 (41.5/80) 51% Ruffian : 80, +27=23-30 (38.5/80) 48% For comparison here are the results of Chessfun's match between the same engines (same time-limit) running under the ChessBase interface: Ruffian - Gambit Tiger 2.0 : 40 (+ 12,= 10,- 18), 42.5 % === Match 2: Both programs use the Chess Assistant book It seemed that Ruffian's book was a handicap in the first match (see comments to that match). In the second match I only made one change and had both programs use the same opening book. Gambit Tiger had used the Chess Assistant book in the first match and now both programs used that book. In this match the programs came out of the opening with equal time left as was to be expected. Still, Ruffian usually fell behind on the clock in most of the games after the opening was over. The result was quite different from the first match and Chessfun's results (I only had time for 40 games): Tiger Gambit II: 40, +9=14-17 (16/40) 40% Ruffian : 40, +17=14-9 (24/40) 60% The result in this case was decisive and the match with Ruffian using its own book was much closer throughout. If someone wants the games let me know and I will e-mail them.
