CPU and memory bandwidth are both important. The numbers that are important is how long does it take you both to clear and also to fill the hash table. If you are playing G/1 minute and allocate 512 MB hash most of the time for a move may be spent clearing the hash table. If you are playing at correspondence chess rate, then the hash table will fill up no matter how large you make it. Running test suites on the machine with the chosen programs at time controls that approximate those to be used playing may help to determine a good setting.
