Subject: On a personal note (if that's allowed here!), I'm so depressed!

Go up one level in this thread

I was so happy and hopeful when I was able to get the 1.4 Ghz. (266) Athlon at
the time when it was the fastest proccessor for chess, AND the price was very
low for such a thing, at the time, and I had a feeling/hunch that it would be a
long time before something else would make me desperate for a further upgrade,
and I was going to invest in all things I wanted a good computer for, and learn
all about the relevant hardware and software etc.
And from what I see now, I was rather correct! It was about 15 months ago now,
and even till now, there isn't anything that much better for very many
purposses, and I could probably have been enjoing all these things for another
2-3 years or more without feeling too out of date.
But the first 15 months has gone absolutely down the drain for me already! I
have hardly been in touch with my own computer as my living arrangements were
not as planned, and my computer is mainly in storage, and even though I did have
a speed modem and phone line installed, I got into deep arguments with the
internet and phone company because they were charging me fore many months when I
understood they were freezing my account a few times, as I had requested
(because I was away, or it wasn't going to be worth my while paying monthly at
certain periods). Now, hopefully, they have cut off my account, so I hope I
wasn't also being charged for the last 3 months, and the phone line is certainly
cut off. But maybe they didn't, and I owe many thousands of shekels altogether,
for nothing. And, if I don't pay, I'll never have that connection back (under my
name), even when I get into a new rented place.
  CONCLUSION:
1)I think that AMD 1.4 Ghz/233 was a very good purchase (though not what I made
of it), as things are not yet even twice that speed, so for chess, the fastest
proccessor is not that much better than that one yet. And normally, you are
completely out of date 2 years later.
2) Can anyone advise me regarding (my complaints) ADSL (fast internet [in
Israel] etc), especially someone who lives here, in Israel.
3) My main computer chess aim is to simply install the strongest and most
accurate and authentic and successful chess program (and even more than just one
altogether) on my own computer (atleast the abovementioned one , if not a new
one, indeed, hopefully still NOT neccesary) and ubderstand a bit about basic
uses with internet, winboard etc.) and that the program should be reasonably
easy to see the analisys and next best etc, any time.
(I'm waiting to see what results are with Tiger 15 at the momment!)
Then, I'll settle down, and try to improve my actual chess playing with it/them.
And eventually progress to other endevours, but not to leave chess as a loose
end in my life which I never really got my teeth into!
4) It should be OK to air ones hapinesses and upsets sometimes, over this forum.
Thanks for reading!
