I would suggest starting against a 1200-1400 rated personality, in a game at a
time control that you are comfortable with. You can even give the personality a
little less time if you don't feel like waiting around, but I would not
recommend it, since you are trying to find your own level.

In CM9000, when you create your user account, you should press the "What is My
Rating?" button. Answer the question about your age and experience with chess,
and the program will give you a rating that could very well be near your
strength.

Also, you could try using the "Game -> Quickstart" menu group, and you will see
the approximate strength of players in all of those rating groups. Try the
"Beginner" group first, and work your way up until you find a reasonable
opponent.
