My parents and friends tell me I'm foolish for spending the extra time to do this before I get my CS degree. Because they've never heard of unix, they think it's some new thing that will be out of style in a matter of months. They have it backwards though. They think Microsoft is here to stay and that this obscure unix thing they've never heard of is just a thing that's in fassion that will go away and my time spent here learning unix will be a waste. I don't think it's a coincidence that unix has been around for over three decades, that unix sys admins make an average of $20,000 more per year than Microsofties, or that all of the big businesses are using or migrating to unix or linux. I don't think linux will overtake Windows anytime in the forseeable future, but linux is here to stay. I also don't think it's a lock that it will never overtake Windows. There was a time before Microsoft when it didn't seem possible for a word processor to break into the market or spreadsheet programs to have a chance, with things like Word Perfect and Lotus. Microsoft obviously overtook them. Did Rome last forever? No, and neither will Microsoft. Just my opinion. Russell
