It's a platform -- so I don't really get the analogy to Visual Basic aside from the fact that Visual Basic has a .NET edition. There's a bit of a learning curve with .NET -- and it's a hill I haven't finished climbing myself -- so how quickly developers adobt or reject the technology will either hurt MS and help competing application platforms, or it will really help MS to hurt technologies like Java/JSP.
