There was a big progress in chess software and the difference between the world champion of 1997(Junior4.6) and Fritz7 is about 300 elo based on chessfun rating list). If you consider the possibility of diminishing returns then it is possible to imagine that Fritz7 is better than deeper blue inspite of the hardware difference. Seems to me that Kramnik has more of an advantage then Kasparov did >because he has the program himself. Yes I wonder how well he fared against his own >copy of Fritz..
