[sorry for the blank post] Computer chess is a distinguished field in AI research. Most computer chess innovations are published in academic journals (e.g., ICCA/ICGA), and a significant number of those involved in computer chess programming are academics (e.g., Dr. Hyatt). Research conducted in computer chess has to follow the scientific guidelines, no less than a research conducted in physics. And for these reasons I believe Rolf's post was definitely on-topic (though a little different from common posts here). Omid.
