I agree that computer chess is far closer to algorithms study than to typical
AI:

"computer chess to AI, is like Grand Prix racing to the car industry"
-- Russel and Norvig, Artificial Intelligence

Nevertheless, it's definitely considered a field in computer science.

That's not correct. Almost every significant algorithm ever introduced, has been
the result of a research usually conducted by an academic and published in a
scientific journal.

Even today there are many people around the world working on computer chess as
part of their thesis research (as does yours truly). For example the so much
talked about MTD(f) algorithm was the result of Aske Plaat's research for his
Ph.D.; and don't forget Heinz's contributions to the forward pruning domain...
