Lex has already answered this, namely that if you use the engine book
(and you should) this won't matter. If you start making your own books
then you can download a utility from the lokasoft website called
bookoptimize. The readme explains how it works.

Try this: make a PGN file, then make an openings book out of it in
Fritz 7. Now do the same with Crafty. Both books contain exactly
the same information, yet the Fritz7 book will be several magnitudes
bigger. The Fritz book format is just horribly inefficient.
