Subject: winboard and engine configuration

Author: Kai Skibbe

Since the last two month I have tested several chess engines with
winboard 4.0. My experience leads to the following configuration:

***** Part of winboard.ini ******

"
/firstChessProgramNames="Comet_A95 /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Comet
\"Craf1518 /hash=24m /hashp=10m /tbpath=d:\\WinBoard\\Crafty\\TB\"
/fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Crafty
\"TCB_0037 !start.cui -inc 1 -tc 1 -cp -thinking\" /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\TCBishop
\"ExC_245 xb hash 32\" /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\ExChess
\"Phal_17 -t32768 -r800\" /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Phalanx
Gol_105 /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Goliath
"
/secondChessProgramNames="Comet_A95 /sd=d:\\WinBoard\\Comet
\"Craf1518 /hash=24m /hashp=10m /tbpath=d:\\WinBoard\\Crafty\\TB\"

With these settings I have played automatically with the match game option
(/mg=xx) of winboard.
Does anyone have other experiences with the configuration files ? Are my
settings
optimal for the engines ?
In previous posts in CCC I have read about different opinions of turning
pondering
on while playing match games. What do the authors think ?
IMO crafty, comet, phalanx, tcbishop and exchess does not have any problems
with pondering on. Only the author of goliath explicitly say that pondering has
to be turned off while playing against other engines.

Greetings
Kai
