Since the last two month I have tested several chess engines with winboard 4.0. My experience leads to the following configuration: ***** Part of winboard.ini ****** " /firstChessProgramNames="Comet_A95 /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Comet \"Craf1518 /hash=24m /hashp=10m /tbpath=d:\\WinBoard\\Crafty\\TB\" /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Crafty \"TCB_0037 !start.cui -inc 1 -tc 1 -cp -thinking\" /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\TCBishop \"ExC_245 xb hash 32\" /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\ExChess \"Phal_17 -t32768 -r800\" /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Phalanx Gol_105 /fd=d:\\WinBoard\\Goliath " /secondChessProgramNames="Comet_A95 /sd=d:\\WinBoard\\Comet \"Craf1518 /hash=24m /hashp=10m /tbpath=d:\\WinBoard\\Crafty\\TB\" /sd=d:\\WinBoard\\Crafty \"TCB_0037 !start.cui -inc 1 -tc 1 -cp -thinking\" /sd=d:\\WinBoard\\TCBishop \"ExC_245 xb hash 32\" /sd=d:\\WinBoard\\ExChess \"Phal_17 -t32768 -r800\" /sd=d:\\WinBoard\\Phalanx Gol_105 /sd=d:\\WinBoard\\Goliath " **** crafty.rc (configuration file of crafty) **** log on learn 7 noise 30000 book on book random 1 book width 2 resign 9 display extstats **** comet.ics (configuration file of comet) **** MAX_HASH [nr of megabytes]: 32 PONDER [ON or OFF]: OFF SELECTIVITY [ON or OFF]: ON BOOK [ON or OFF]: ON **** !start.cui (configuration file of TCBishop) **** prompt off board off wait on ;logf TCBishop.log ; Read the opening book ; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ book readpgn <tcb_book.pgn x ; Hash table ; ~~~~~~~~~~ tcbtest size 24 size2 21 x **** goliath.ini (configuration file of goliath) **** HASHSIZE [0 - 80 MB]=26 BOOK [ON or OFF]=ON PONDER [ON or OFF]=OFF ________________________________________________________ With these settings I have played automatically with the match game option (/mg=xx) of winboard. Does anyone have other experiences with the configuration files ? Are my settings optimal for the engines ? In previous posts in CCC I have read about different opinions of turning pondering on while playing match games. What do the authors think ? IMO crafty, comet, phalanx, tcbishop and exchess does not have any problems with pondering on. Only the author of goliath explicitly say that pondering has to be turned off while playing against other engines. Greetings Kai
