Why? Because they can't be trusted when they have commercial interests, suddenly they might decide they don't want to support 150 free engines, or they might introduce changes that everyone hates, or maybe the protocol is simply too advanced for novice chessprogrammers, etc.. Such power should not be given freely to a non-democratic commercial company, IMO. Imagine 150 free left without a GUI because chessbase changes its policy! And can the engine be called "free" at all if it requires you to _buy_ a chessbase product before you can use it? WBII is great, WBIII could be all that we have ever wished for. I still hope someone some day implements WBIII, or else we might actually have to support UCI, time will tell but I keep my hopes up for now :) My dream is that all engines support the WBII protocol, so we don't need chessbase GUIs :) -S.
