Specifically when there's a choice between the two. There's a lot of Fritz related and an increasing number of Arena "UCI contests". Quite a few engines have problems with pondering and/or learning with UCI, which means that one engine becomes two just due to the protocol choice. I'm sure that there are more or less complicated solutions to the learning issue and that the pondering problem is neglible. Even so, I think it's a problem if inferior performance is chosen out of convenience. Especially since every single Elo point is treasured like gold. Regards, Mogens
