I suspect it is a gcc 3.1 issue as the 3.x compilers have been exhibiting strange problems with crafty from time to time... If you have the right target set, endianness and everything should be set correctly... I can't get crafty to compile/run on a sparc at all, for example, which really points out a hole in gcc...
