To My Fellow Crafty Friends:

Crafty 19.00 SE Release

Continuing with the standard of 17.16 SE, I am releasing Crafty 19.00 SE – a
modified version of the wonderful chess program by Dr. Robert M. Hyatt of UAB.
Dr. Hyatt is the legal owner of this software and maintains the copyright.

The 16 pre-defined levels remain the same, they are as follows in increasing
level of difficulty:

pawngrabber
beginner
novice
simpleton
woodpusher
knight
bishop
player
club
expert
lowmaster
master
highmaster
im
gm
standard

Each level has increased understanding of piece value and a deeper search. To
gain more flexibility, search depth was replaced by nodes searched in these
predefined settings. In addition levels "pawngrabber" through "high_master"
use the option "dm" <delay move> automatically. So that if you play a 5 3 game
on any setting, it will respond as if it was playing a 5 3 game and not move
instantaneously.

The idea behind this is that in typical low settings, the computer will often
respond instantaneously - which is not how a human opponent would play. This
will give the lower settings a more natural feel for the player. With the 16
predefined settings, you work your way up through the different levels. Each
subsequent level has a better piece evaluation and sees a about twice as deep
as the previous level. The goal was to make the levels progressive in a natural
stepping up process. I estimate that each level has a difference of about 100
elo points - starting with "pawngrabber" at ~1000 ELO and ending with
"high_master" at around ~2200-2300. The "IM", "GM" and "Standard Levels" do not
have any restrictions on depth and would be considered "professional" levels.

The “booster” command was dropped as Crafty new extensions logic accomplished
what I was trying to do, but more effectively.

As always, you may be removed from this email list by simply responding to this
email and typing "remove" in the "subject" field. I have also enclosed the new
logo for Crafty 19 SE.
There are a few modidfications to the actual engine - nothing major - let me
know if think it's better or worse than the unmodified crafty. I think it's
about the same. The latest version of crafty is very strong and there wasn't
much I can do to improve it.

The GUI Arena (freeware) works wonderfully with Crafty chess engines and clones.
You may download it from here.
