The UCI engines and Arena will still exist.

Sales argument?

What are you talking about?

I've also heard Deep Blue is going to play Fisher!

Some methods of learning that are done in WinBoard
programs are not going to work very well in UCI.
There are other methods, and there are solutions
to make them work.

You need this with WinBoard as well because the WinBoard
protocol is IMHO unfit for direct user usage. Moreover, UCI
is an interface to the GUI. If you don't use a GUI, you
shouldn't use UCI!

A good common and consistent interface for the user is IMHO
exactly what it is about.

What has XML to do with getting a clean standard?

I don't know what you mean here. How many professional
chessprograms are sold for Linux? Currently, only
Vincent does it. Christophe will offer one for free, but
that is not selling, so it doesn't count.

I develop on Linux, and so does Christophe, but I don't
need a GUI like WinBoard or Arena for that.

You prefer the race conditions and the redundant commands
I'm sure.
