I think you may be making a generalization here. You may be right about Fritz (and others I may be unaware of). But The King engine in CM9000 actually searches a tiny bit SLOWER in terms of NPS than the engine in CM8000, and yet independent tests (mostly by users on this board) have shown it to be anywhere from 30-100 points stronger than the previous version, thanks to improvements in the EVALUATION (or, to use your term, quality). jm
