The irony here is, yes, I know :) The idea is to do this in winboard (or some platform outside chessmaster) and ultimately understand how the different engines behave. That's why I'm trying to learn what settings affect what; for example, handicapping Fritz within Fritz doesn't mean anything outside of the Fritz GUI. I've read of certain drawbacks (such as accessibility to books and databases) depending on how engines are imported and weaknesses of diffeerent protocols. Being completely new to this (and again this is just for fun) I can't very well gauge how a 3rd party engine is behaving when I import it into chessmaster if I don't know how the settings work. CM may destroy it and it may be because I've screwed up the settings, or it may be because CM is more powerful. My 5 minute test proves that I've screwed up the settings. So, what's not pointless is that I've learned that doing comparisons fairly is no easy task, and actually I'm pretty much done, tired of doing it! Brian
