Roy,

The only time I've ever seen this was with my old Aptiva running Win98.  Same
thing.  It turned out that the video driver I got when I installed Win98 (from
Microsoft's CD) was bad.  When I downloaded the driver from the video card
manufacturer's site, the problem went away.

Not sure that will be your case at all, but when searching for clues, sometimes
extra info will make you think of something else that might be relevant.

Good luck -- that is VERY frustrating.
