I for one believe that the pendulum has swung to far the other way when it comes to the match preparation. I don’t understand why people think its fair for a person to get the exact program that they will be playing before the match and keep programmers from making changes during the match. I think it would be fairer to both sides if the program had to play a hundred standard games against GMs before the match so that Kramnik could use those games to since how the program played. I don’t think programs change that much more than good chess players do in a given amount of time. Just pay the GMs $100 win/$25 loss/game and let them play on ICC to give the world champion some games to look at. Also why not let the programmers change the code during the match. People change tactics during a match (ie they may decide to play a closed game vs open if they find their opponent is week in those types of positions) so why not let the programmers change the program. They are not going to do a lot of changes because they could easily break something. Now all that being said I still think Kramnik would win this match against Fritz convincingly. I just want more fairness for future matches. Side note: It sure would have been nice to see Kramnik or Kasparov play Deep Blue under the abovementioned conditions.
