This doesn't seem surprising to me, because when testgames were played against
Fritz 7, or between any other engines where one used Fritz 7.ctg like they are
published, it's not unusual that such games come into a collection the book is
based on. - And if moves from the Fritz 7.ctg were successful in those (newly
added) games, it's only natural that they have higher weights in the Ruffian
book.

I can acknowledge. In a match against Deep Shredder 5 with a large Necchie
openings book (~2 million move), Ruffian 1.0.0 with it's ~59.000 moves openings
lost only by one point (5.5-6.5). I didn't notice anything special in the
opening.

2 Ruffian 1.0.0 010010½½1½½½ 5.5/12

IIRC, Shredder was set to "standard" bookwidth as the Shreder 5 help recommends
it btw. for long test matches; it even recommends "wide" for engine matches
(?!). Maybe if books are not set to "optimal" or narrow width, the smaller size
of the Ruffian book will become visible (when more unusual side-variants are
played).
