It is even nowadays possible - without being a GM or Kramnik - to get a draw
against the strongest chess programs of the world. Below an interesting and
commented example:

e6 {Caro-Kann and the French are my chiefly employed defences against strong
human players or computer programs. I have thoroughly tested both openings in
correspondence chess and rarely ever lost a game. In over the board played
games, my results vs strong players with the Caro Kann are quite excellent
whereas with the French in each game all can happen. / Meine hauptsaechlichen
Antworten mit Schwarz auf e2-e4 gegen starke Spieler und Computerprograme sind
die Caro-Kann oder die Franzoesische Verteidigung. Beide Eroeffnungen kenne
ich gut aus Fernpartien, wo ich damit kaum je eine Partie verloren habe. Am
Brett sind indessen die Ergebnisse mit Caro-Kann besser.} 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Nf6 {
This time not 3...Bb4 / Dieses Mal verzichte ich auf 3...Lb4.} 4. Bg5 {
I would have had much more fun if Fritz7 had played 4.e5 Nfd7 and so on. /
Lieber haette ich es gesehen, wenn Fritz die Variante 4.f4 Sfd7 gespielt haette.
} 4... Bb4 {As I had not prepared myself for this game and since at the moment
I could no longer remember the rather complicated variations against the
dangerous Alekhin-Chatard-attack after 4...Be7 5.e5 Nfd7 6.h4!? I chose the
seldom played McCutcheon. / Da ich mich auf diese Partie nicht vorbereitet
hatte und mir die komplexen Varianten des gefaehrlichen
Aljechin-Chatard-Angriffs nach 4...Le7 5.e5 Sfd7 6.h4!? momentan nicht
gegenwaertig waren, waehlte ich die selten gespielte McCutcheon-Variante.} 5.
e5 h6 6. Bd2 {Other moves like 6.exf6 hxg5 or 6.Bh4 g5 are easy to play for
Black. Most interesting is however 6.Bc1!? / Andere Zuege wie 6.exf6 hxg5 oder
6.Lh4 g5 sind fuer Schwarz leicht zu spielen. Auesserst interessant jedoch 6.
Lc1!?} 6... Bxc3 7. bxc3 Ne4 8. Qg4 {Only after the end of this game did I
realize that this is a very critical move nowadays. But I could not decide for
8...g6 as I had only once played this variation. / Erst nach Partieende
realisierte ich, dass dieses Manoever heutzutage als kritisch gilt. Allerdings
konnte ich mich nicht zu 8...g6 entschliessen, da ich diese Variante erst
einmal gespielt hatte.} 8... Kf8 9. h4 c5 10. Rh3 {The first time I had to
study the situation more deeply. The question was: what to play now and to
choose between 10...Qa5, 10...Nc6 or 10...cxd4. After nine minutes of thinking
time I could distinguish the various possible plans / Hier ueberlegte ich das
erste Mal waehrend laengerer Zeit, weil ich mich zwischen 10...Da5, 10...Sc6
oder 10...cxd4 zu entscheiden hatte. Um die verschiedenen Abspiele in

cxd4 Qb6 12. Nf3 Nc6 13. Bd3 Nxe5 {This move has a bad reputation in theory,
but some years ago I found an improvement that should be well enough for an
easy draw. And what else should I do against strong players and computers? In
the meantime, after further analysis I am no longer so sure since there exists
a very critical variation I have just found after this game. I willl however
keep this secret for the time being. / Dieses Abspiel geniesst einen
schlechten Ruf. Doch hatte ich vor einigen Jahren eine Verbesserung gefunden,
die gut genug zum Remis ist. Und was will ich mehr gegen starke Spieler und

A more complicated continuation would have been 19.Qc7 but after 19...Qd4!
Black holds the position. / Eine komplizierte Fortsetzung waere 19.Dc7 aber
nach 19...Dd4! kann sich Schwarz halten.} 19... Kh7 {
Of course not 19...Kf7?? 20.Qc7 +- / Natuerlich nicht 19...Kf7?? 20.Dc7 +-} 20.
Bc3 {Looks dangerous but Black has a sufficient defence. / Sieht gefaehrlich
aus, doch verfuegt Schwarz ueber eine genuegende Verteidigung.} 20... Qxa2 21.
Qe5 Qxc2+ {And Fritz7 offered a draw which I accepted. White cannot avoid
perpetual check. / Und hier bot Fritz7 Remis an, was ich annahm. Ewiges Schach
kann Weiss nicht verhindern.} 1/2-1/2
