Grandmasters have been known to blunder as badly as this or worse.  Korchnoi
once played QxR in a World Championship qualifier against Spassky and then lost
his Queen to QxQ!  Not even a beginner will play this.

If the match were fixed I think they'd have found a less obvious way to do it.
