Kramnik knew he was in for a long ending that at best he could only draw. This had to effect his mind set somewhat. It may have been easier for him take this out. This way he could claim it was a blunder, and the position was most likely a dead draw without having to prove it over the board. Were he knew one slip in this type of position would bring a quick end. This would save face is some way for him, because now Deep Fritz can only claim a flawed win in some peoples mind.
