I still don't think that's very clear.  What does he mean by 'brute force'?
The other answer to that question[1] implies that 12 is the software depth, and
the hardware could add a maximum of 6 plies, not counting quiescence.  If not,
then it's still impossible to explain a number like 4(5), which comes up more
than once in the logs.
