no it does not run off batteries,it runs off a 12v-500ma powersupply.although it is possible to construct a batterypack for a item such as this ,i doubth if the batteries would last more than 30mins as the drain would be very high.if the voltage drops to 9v it will not operate properly and using recharge ni-cadium batts would even shorten the time.i advise u to just run it from the adaptor ,make sure it is 12v and not less than 500ma(milliamp).
