If it's just about having a real chess set, boards & pieces, you could consider
one of the wooden boards which can be connected to various pc programs.
Unfortunately, only *some* progs support *some* boards...
Maybe someone else has a link to a compatibility overview (which programs work
with which electronic chess boards)?
