Are you sure your windows has UDMA-access to the harddisk? Normally the file
cache in w2k works very well.

To find out the size of physical memory:

	MEMORYSTATUS ms;
   	ms.dwLength = sizeof(MEMORYSTATUS);
   	GlobalMemoryStatus(&ms);

ms.dwAvailPhys shows the free mem,
ms.dwTotalPhys shows the complete mem.
