David, Given that you state your rating to be around 1400, I would suggest the Ivan II by Excalibur Electronics. The machine is due for release very soon. It is a traditional press sensory board but it also has an inbuilt LCD chessboard display as well. I expect it to be a very solid hobby / middle club strength program - certainly as strong as you would require unless you feel you will improve rapidly. I guess ICD will get this machine in when they become available. www.excaliburelectronics.com There really isn't a whole lot more available unless you do as the others suggest and get the wooden board to plug into your PC. Mephisto make much stronger dedicated computers than the Excalibur Ivan II, and using wooden boards as well, but they are very expensive. Most of the other dedicated machines nowadays tend to be calculator sized with inbuilt LCD boards or small peg sensory boards. Novag do make some tabletop machines as well, but I can't recommend their 16K programs (Quartz, Agate Plus) as they really play some inexplicably terrible moves at times. Their Emerald Classic Plus (32K) is, however, a very good program, and it comes with a better quality board with wooden pieces. In my own situation, I tend to prefer using smaller dedicated machines and an ordinary wooden chess set and wooden board.
