Indeed, I looked at the line much too briefly. It's kind of an opening trap.

It seems to me white should have avoided 17. 0-0 ?! and played 17. Nd5 Qxg2 18.
Rf1 Nxc3 19. Nf4 Qe4 20. bxc3 instead, that probably is still enough to hold
rough equality, although the position isn't really fun of course :).
