Was it an endgame position with a lot of tablebase access, so the hard drive was
constantly working? That's the most difficult situation on my W98se system. The
best result for me is to set the tablebase cache size to the minimum 1MB, so
ChssBase.ini reads (for example):
[Tablebase]
Path=C:\TABLEBASES
CacheSizeKB=1024
You can set the cache size directly with a text editor such as Notepad, or via
the Options dialog box (Tablebases tab) in Fritz.

If that is not the cause, then it sounds like you may have a memory management
problem -- cause unknown. I'm not sure if anything will help. I'm currently
experimenting with a related tweaking utility called "CacheMan" for W9x/Me
available at:
http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/memory/vcache.html
I like what it does, but don't have any solid scientific evidence to back up my
opinion. Most authorities say to let windows handle it and avoid all such memory
management tweaks, but I'm not convinced. I like to tweak it.
