On the contrary!  Probability and likelihood are EVERYTHING in chess!  You
deliberately play moves which are intended to "increase your chances" in the
game.  i.e. to increase the "probability [of success or whatever]."

For example, setting difficult problems for your opponent is a good idea because
it increases the likelihood that your opponent will make a poor move.
