Subject: How to Resolve the Opening Book Issue

Author: Bob Durrett

Simply come up with one opening book and require that all contestants use that
same book.

This would apply in Computer vs computer matches,

This would apply in Computer vs Human matches, and

This would apply in Human vs Human matches.

Doing this would answer questions as to how well the contestants would do
without an opening advantage.

Humans should be given ample time and opportunity to memorize the opening book
before the match.

For each opening used, there should be two games, the second using the same
opening as the first but with colors reversed.

But don't do this for championship matches!!!! Opening preparation is a part of
the game, and we shouldn't try to stiffle the creativity of the contestants in
preparing opening novelties.

In fact, maybe the whole idea is bad because of that last point! We should not
do anything which would discourage creativity. The top GMs certainly are
creative in the preparation of opening novelties.

Incidentally, opening books for chess engines maybe offer fertile ground for
preparation of opening novelties too. Maybe the programmers need some GM help
in this area.
