I guess that you ignore the second time control in your calculation how much time to use(correct me if I am wrong) I can imagine a case when it may be important even under winboard. Imagine a case that all the first 39 moves were book moves. Gaviota is at move 40 and has 40 minutes for this move and 40 minutes for moves 41-80. Does Gaviota going to use a big part of it's 40 minutes for move 40? If you say that your book is not big enough to have lines of 77 plies then we can discuss about a case when the time control is x minutes/20 moves or in case that all of the previous moves of gaviota were forced so it did not need time to play them.
