I guess that you ignore the second time control in your calculation how much
time to use(correct me if I am wrong)
I can imagine a case when it may be important even under winboard.

Imagine a case that all the first 39 moves were book moves.

Gaviota is at move 40 and has 40 minutes for this move and 40 minutes for moves
41-80.

Does Gaviota going to use a big part of it's 40 minutes for move 40?

If you say that your book is not big enough to have lines of 77 plies then we
can discuss about a case when the time control is x minutes/20 moves or in case
that all of the previous moves of gaviota were forced so it did not need time to
play them.
