Trying to beat human chessplayers with the limited hardware available right now
can also be a goal. Creating a chess engine which beats humans consistently
under current (or older) hardware could mean that the engine uses some new
“software patterns” which could also be applied to other (non-chess) areas.

Again: Different people have different goals.
